Who Can Participate?

Environmental Concern is coordinating efforts for Marylanders Grow Oysters on the La Trappe Creek, San Domingo Creek, and The Miles River.

If you would like to participate in restoring local oyster populations and improving water quality please contact us.

La Trappe Creek

Environmental Concern began working with volunteers on La Trappe Creek in 2009. We identified 46 piers on La Trappe Creek. We enrolled 15 growers who cared for 110 cages.

In Spring 2010 the year-old oysters were released to an oyster sanctuary in the creek. The sanctuary selection process looked at factors like water clarity, depth, and substrate composition to help ensure survival of the young oysters. The sanctuary will be protected and the oysters will be allowed to grow and hopefully repopulate the creek.

In August, 2010 we distributed 92 cages to 13 growers.

San Domingo Creek

Efforts on San Domingo Creek began in 2009. We identified 107 piers on San Domingo Creek. In September 2009 -188 cages were distributed to 31 participating growers.

Spring 2010 EC collected the cages and released the young oysters to a sanctuary in San Domingo Creek.

Efforts continued in 2010 as 170 new cages were distributed to 29 growers.
