ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Marylanders Grow Oysters Program was established by Governor Martin O’Malley, and is being managed by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources in conjunction with the Oyster Recovery Partnership, the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science and the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services which constructed the oyster cages for this program.

In Talbot County :

Oyster restoration efforts in Talbot County began in 2008 when 177 waterfront property owners volunteered to grow oysters in 854 oyster cages suspended from piers along the Tred Avon River. In August 2009 the oysters were relocated to an oyster sanctuary in the Tred Avon near Oxford (read article).

In 2009, the program expanded to include San Domingo Creek and La Trappe Creek with Environmental Concern as River Coordinator. In 2009, approximately 50 growers cared for 416 cages. Young oysters were released to sanctuaries in Spring 2010.

In 2010 we distributed 170 cages to 29 growes on the San Domingo Creek, and 92 cages to 13 growers on the La Trappe Creek. In 2010 Environmental Concern became the coordinator for the Miles River. We have 58 growers who are caring for 290 cages.
