Characteristics: herbaceous perennial with small blue flowers ½ to 1 inch in diameter, grass-like leaves and fibrous roots

Flowers: May to July

Fruit: round capsule with black seeds in summer

Growth: 4 to 20 inches tall, slow rate of spread

Shade: full sun to partial shade

Habitat: meadows, wet meadows, wet woods

Hydrology: facultative wetland, fresh water, irregular inundation to upland

Range: Newfoundland to Minnesota, south to Florida and Texas

Comments: related to Iris, low wildlife food value
