Fruit: Dark purple-black berries, mid June through mid-July.

Shade: tolerates full shade

Habitat: shrub swamps and forested wetlands.

Hydrology: Facultative, tolerates seasonal inundation, salt resistant.

Range: Newfoundland to Mississippi on Costal Plain.

Comments: Tolerates drought, beautiful fall foliage colors of orange-red. High food value for songbirds. Good industry tree.
