Onoclea sensibilis – Sensitive Fern
Characteristics: perennial fern with lobed leaves and interesting fertile frond
Flowers: April - May
Fruit: spores fertile fronds
Growth: 2 to 3 feet tall, medium rate of spread, spreads by rhizome
Shade: prefers partial shade, will tolerate full shade
Habitat: woods, marshes, swamps, bogs, streambanks.
Hydrology: facultative wetland, fresh water, salinity less than 0.5 ppt, irregular to permanent inundation
Range: throughout most of the Eastern and Central U.S.
Comments: grows well in average garden soil that does not dry out, prefers pH 4.5 to 7
