Characteristics: grass-like herbaceous perennial with triangular stems

Growth: up to 5 ft tall, moderate rate of spread approximately 0.5 ft per year in unconsolidated sediment

Shade: requires full sun

Habitat: brackish tidal marshes

Hydrology: obligate wetland species (OBL), upper 10% of intertidal zone up to spring tide elevation, salinity up to 25 ppt

Range: Nova Scotia to Florida and Texas; California

Comments: moderate wildlife food value, fish nesting habitat, does well in fluctuating salinity
