Pepperbush

Characteristics: Broad-leaved, deciduous shrub. Leaves are alternate, simple and oblong.

Flowers: Perfect, fragrant and white spikes July-August.

Fruit: September- February, brown, capsule

Growth: Height: 6-12’ and Spread 3-6’. Rate of growth: Slow to medium.

Shade: Does best in partial shade.

Habitat: Tidal and non-tidal forested wetlands, shrub swamps, sandy woods, costal river floodplains.

Hydrology: Facultative. Salt resistant and tolerates seasonal to regular inundation. Tidal zone: near mean high water and above to spring tide elevation.

Range: Southern Maine, south to Florida and eastern Texas.

Comments: Nice fall color of yellow. Flowers attract butterflies and beneficial insects.
