Characteristics: Evergreen tree; leaves opposite or whorled, three sided and
spreading. The color of the foliage varies from medium green to sage green
to blue green.
Flowers: March-April, yellow brown cones.
Fruit: July-March dark blue cones or berries.
Growth: Height 50-75’ and Spread 35-50’.
Rate of growth: medium.
Shade: Likes full sun but will tolerate partial shade.
Habitat: Broad range.
Hydrology: Salt resistant. Tolerates irregular inundation.
Range: Found in mountain, piedmont and costal plain. East and central North
America, east of the Rocky Mountains.
Comments: Specimen plant or nice if planted in a grouping. Provides shelter
for wildlife in winter. Provides nesting for such species as native sparrow,
mockingbird and robin. Berries are consumed by many species of birds such as
quail, woodpeckers, robin, bluebird, warblers, blue jay and cedar waxwing.
