Characteristics: tall shrub to small tree with shiny dark green compound leaves
Flowers: July to September
Fruit: October – November red berry
Growth: approximately 20 feet tall and wide
Shade: full sun
Habitat: fields, roadsides, fence rows
Hydrology: facultative upland (FACU-), fresh water, salinity < 0.5 ppt, irregular inundation
Range: throughout much of Mid-Atlantic region & eastern U.S.
Comments: red fall color, wildlife winter food source; early colonizer of open sites; adaptable to various soil texture and pH
