Characteristics: perennial fern with interesting fertile stalk that resembles a cinnamon stick

Flowers: April - May

Fruit: stalk with spores

Growth: up to 5 feet tall, slow rate of spread, spreads by rhizome

Shade: prefers partial shade, will tolerate full shade

Habitat: forested wetlands, stream banks, bog edges

Hydrology: facultative wetland, fresh water, salinity less than 0.5 ppt, irregularly, seasonally, regularly, or permanently saturated (up to 100% of the growing season)

Range: Newfoundland to Minnesota south to Florida and Texas

Comments: will tolerate periods of drought
