Blueberry

Characteristics: Deciduous shrub; leaves alternate and simple.

Flowers:White or pinkish bell shape, Mid-May – June

Fruit: Berry, blue-black; July-August

Growth: Slow growth rate. Mature height 6-12’ and spread 8-12’

Shade: Partial shade to full shade.

Habitat: Likes moist acidic soils found in forested wetlands, bogs and swamps.

Hydrology: Facultative wetland. Tolerates seasonal inundation. Salt resistant.

Range: Nova Scotia to southern Quebec, west to Wisconsin, south to Florida and
Texas.

Comments: Blue berries are a very valuable food source for wildlife. Displays beautiful red fall foliage; plant in groupings. Fairly insensitive to wind or ice damage. Attracts bluebirds, woodpeckers, blue jay, robin, orioles and tanagers.
