Characteristics: Biennial that reseeds prolifically; leaves alternate.

Flowers: Yellow with dark brown centers; June through fall.

Height: 2-3’

Shade: Partial to full sun.

Habitat: Moist to well drained soils, fields, meadows and roadsides.

Hydrology: Facultative Upland, irregular inundation and upland.

Range: Costal plain, piedmont plateau and mountain zone.

Comments: Maryland state flower, drought tolerant once established. Long blooming flower, good for erosion control, seed setting food source for birds, nectar source for butterflies and beneficial insects. Perfect companion plant Panicum virgatum Switchgrass. Endangered plant in the state of New York. Considered invasive in the southern part of the United States by the Southern Weed Science Society, Weeds of the US & Cananda.
