Education > Youth Programs > A Muse In The Marsh

Throughout the workshop the students write and compose a variety of poems. They explore types of poems from how-tos to haikus, and explore many wetland ideas in a new creative way. Here are a few samples of student poems that came out of Muse in the Marsh Workshops.

How to Cook Roasted Swamp

A pinch of mud, a dash of flies
That's how you cook a swamp surprise
Drizzle green slime over a cup of lake
LIke icing on a marshy cake
Roast for an hour in humid heat
Your swamp surprise is almost complete
Add dragonfly wings for a hint of zest
(The irridescent ones taste the best!)
And finally find a frog to hop
For a green and squishy cherry on top.

Dreams of a Cattail

I dream of growing tall, fast
for I want being small to be a thing of the past

I dream of spreading my parachute seeds
To make a million mini mes

I dream of being soft and furry
So when I touch someone they do not scurry

I dream of being better than me
Oh that would bring me so much glee

If only these dreams were to come true
I would be happy and not so blue.

Peaceful Wetlands

Lilypads filled with beauty
Lilypads filled with secrets
The frogs, majestic and bold, croak their secrets to the world

Grass whispers as the wind blows on its edges
HIding crickets that chirp their happy songs.
